The reason behind Sheridan getting its name revolves around early pioneer Willaim Hammond. He opened a general store at Queen Elizabeth Way and Winston Churchill Boulevard. Later, the village that grew around the general store became known as Hammonsville. However, in the year 1857, the name was changed to Sheridan after the village post office was inaugurated. The story behind changing the name goes like the local Stephen Oughtred who was a blacksmith came up with this name in honour of Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
