Housing York Inc. is the regional housing corporation that owns and operates 2600 subsidised and market-rent housing units in the whole of York. 

Rent Supplement

The York area has rent assistance agreements with various private landlords. In private rental apartments, residents pay rent according to their income as a rent subsidy. The district will pay the landlord the difference between the tenant's supplemental rent and the unit's market rent.

Market Rent

Market rent housing is where the tenant pays full rent to be decided by the landlord. To be eligible for market rent the applicant must meet the requirements stated by the landlord. You need to contact the housing provider directly in order to get on the tenancy list. 

Federal Co-operatives

Federal housing co-operatives are not supported or in other words funded by York Region. They  don’t have a centralised waiting list, an applicant must directly apply to those federal housing providers. 

Eligibility Requirements for Subsidised Housing in York Region

Eligibility criteria for Subsidised Housing application are as follows:

  • At least one family member should be 16 years of age or older. 
  • All household members should be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or they must hold refugee status. 
  • Applicants must not owe any money to any former housing community. 
  • The applicant for subsidised housing must not be under a deportation or exclusion order to leave the country. 
  • They shouldn’t have a history of being convicted of any rent-related offence (geared to income assistance). 
  • No family member applying for subsidised housing has been convicted for offences under the Criminal Code, the Social housing reform act or HSA. 
  • The household's annual income (including all sources) should be less than $80,000. 
  • The total value of the assets (like investments and real estate, for example) of all members over 16 must be less than $75,000. 
  • The applicant(s) must be able to live independently.

How to Apply for Subsidised Housing in York Region

  • You need to create an account on the portal of Subsidised Housing using your email ID and a 10-character password. 
  • Select 'yes' on receiving emails with reference to your account.
  • Fill in all the information asked for in the application, along with your signature, to complete the housing application. 
  • Attach a scanned copy of each family member's proof of status in Canada. And notice of assessment for each member who is over the age of 18.
